A short primer on patient monitors

Welch Allyn Atlas Monitor

Welch Allyn Atlas Monitor

Not all vital signs monitors are created equally, and we don’t mean in terms of quality of readings or materials and construction, but simply in terms of functionality.

There are spot check monitors, such as the Welch Allyn Spot Vital Signs and the Spot Vital Signs LXi, and then there are continuous monitors, like the Welch Allyn 300 Series, Welch Allyn Atlas, and the GE Carescape.

While some devices will overlap in function, most of the time these monitors occupy a functional space. They satisfy a need and must be chosen based on your needs. A spot check device does exactly what its name implies: it will quickly record a patient’s vitals before he sees the physician.

Continuous monitors are used for procedures, especially where anaesthesia is concerned. Each state has different regulations as to what vitals are being recorded, although the minimum is usually BP, HR and SPO2. Some states will require an ECG readout, which the Atlas monitor has, but the VSM300 and the Carescape do not. Some states require a printed record of these vitals during the procedure. Built-in printers must be ordered at the time of purchase.

With these short guidelines in mind, we at Med Electronics hope that choosing the right monitor for your practice will be easier.
